As Long As They Talkin

The Other day i saw something that was said about me and it was talking about how wack I am, and I kinda think to myself…Damn…and then my day moves on without any loss to my confidence…As long as you talkin I don’t care, Period…to be completely honest…negativity is the best promotion…we as people remember the negative over the positive…especially when the negativity is directed toward a positive/successful person…the niggas you love to hate keep rising…in other words as long as they talking your good, don’t take anything personal

Misconceptions on Radio

I respect anyone doin they thing regardless of where you from, what you do etc…It takes hard work to get a complete buzz going for a artist. the radio is only one slice of the pie shouts to MissLs who wrote the article Miss Ls Website

nullMany of of us music fans have a misconception, thinking there is this need to “fix” radio. For some people, they’ve just grown weary of the constant re-iteration of mainstream music, and others feel like the records they play don’t meet their expectations of “real” Hip-Hop. I will admit there was a point where I was one of these people, but then I thought…it’s time to get over it.

For people who feel that way and don’t listen to radio, why should radio stations play music to cater to them anyway? People who constantly complain about the music played, turn it off and don’t do anything about it. Stations play the music they play because they’re loyal listeners call in and request it. And because Young Swaggerific down the street might have payed 2 G’s to the local DJ to play his new single you might not believe me.

What people don’t understand is that there are two things fueling radio stations, listeners and money, and in the end it all balances out. Let’s take a look at the money aspect first. Artists (majority are new) pay to get their records played. Most of the artists that become successful through radio have the support of a major label and use other marketing tools to supplement their spins on air. Not only do you hear this artist in the car, but you’re seeing them on TV, you’re seeing their ads on your favorite blogs, and all those marketing tactics build familiarity to the artist. So not only are you hearing this artist, but your recognizing them. The familiarity causes listeners to be attentive and make a decision…do I like this artist? And after this familiarity and likability has been established, people begin to call in and request their music. If the artists sucks, then they fail miserably and their songs won’t last very long on the air. Ever notice how some songs you never had the chance to grow tired of because they didn’t get played for a long span of time? While “Every Girl” was being played on the radio for about a year? That’s the role of the listener. “Every Girl” stayed on the radio for about a year because that’s what the popular demand was. Why doesn’t N.E.R.D. get much airplay? Because people who would like that band might have stopped listening to radio therefore wouldn’t request their music, which brings me back to the fact that radio stations aren’t going to play songs that don’t target their audience.

Radio is a business, it’s manipulated by the popular vote. People need to stop blaming the radio stations and realize they’re the problem. Those who are not entertained by southern rap might hear Wacka Flocka Flame and become enraged that they would play such music. Did those people ever stop to think that the only reason he gets airplay is because there’s a group of people out there that likes his music? The only thing that keeps an artist going on the radio is the listeners. End of story.

Let’s think about another factor. The radio is regarded for playing a lot of street music, but did it ever occur to you that it’s those people who like street music that listen to the radio the most? Not everyone has the luxury of i-Pods and high speed internet access. Those that do have an alternative, but as for everyone else they turn to radio. And because radio is their main source, they’re going to call and request what they want to listen to.

The other misconception with radio is by rappers who feel like radio is their ticket to fame. Countless up and comers stand outside their local radio station bum-rushing DJ’s to get put on, or go to the extreme of coming out of pocket to pay the cost. Which goes back to Young Swaggerific down the street who puts all his hope into this in-effective method. Getting on the radio may seem like a celebration worthy accomplishment, but there’s countless dreamers to who it’s proven very unpromising. You can put down a few grand and get your 15 minutes, but because you’re not getting the same amount of spins as a new artists being pushed by a label, you don’t have the familiarity factor to brainwash the listeners. The average listener has a short attention span, and after hearing about 20 seconds of your song if they don’t like the beat, they will be channel surfing. If they don’t recognize you, much less if they’re channel surfing, are they going to request your song to keep you on the air.

I could go on and on but I’m sure you get the picture by now. If you disagree, hence the comment box below.
